Purpose
This Preservation Bulletin defines the Bureau’s approach to historically significant Digital Objects that remain publicly accessible at their original network locations.
Preservation Position
Where a Digital Object remains operational, publicly accessible and historically representative, the Bureau may designate its preservation status as In Situ.
In situ preservation prioritises continued observation, documentation and verification of the original Digital Object rather than immediate duplication or reconstruction.
Monitoring Requirements
Active legacy websites designated for in situ preservation should be subject to routine observation.
Monitoring may include:
- accessibility verification
- integrity assessment
- documentation of significant changes
- confirmation of current network location
- review of external archival copies
