Overview

Bert is Evil was a parody website created by Filipino artist Dino Ignacio in 1997 as part of his Fractal Cow website.

The project presented manipulated images and accompanying text constructing a fictional conspiracy in which Bert, a character from the children’s television program Sesame Street, was secretly associated with historical figures, crimes, and major events.

The website attracted substantial attention during the early expansion of popular culture on the World Wide Web. In 1998, Bert is Evil received both the Webby Award and People’s Voice Award in the Weird category.

As the popularity of the project increased, maintaining the original site became increasingly expensive. Ignacio subsequently made the website available for others to mirror. Multiple copies and derivative versions appeared, allowing the material to circulate beyond the original server while also encouraging additional contributions and reinterpretations.

This process transformed Bert is Evil from an individually authored website into a wider participatory Internet phenomenon.

Cultural Transmission

Material associated with Bert is Evil subsequently circulated independently of its original context.

One derivative image depicted Bert alongside Osama bin Laden. The image was not created by Dino Ignacio and did not form part of his original website.

In 2001, a version of the image was incorporated into posters produced in Bangladesh and was subsequently visible in international news photographs of a political demonstration.

The incident illustrates how digital material may become detached from its original authorship and context, circulate through derivative works, cross between digital and physical media, and acquire meanings unrelated to those of the originating Digital Object.

Preservation Note

The original Bert is Evil website is no longer maintained as an active web publication. Historical material survives through archived captures, contemporary mirrors, derivative websites, documentation, and records created during the site’s period of cultural influence.

Because mirroring formed part of the historical dissemination of Bert is Evil, surviving copies may represent both preservation evidence and independently modified descendants of the original website.

The Bureau therefore records the object as a distributed archival preservation case. Surviving copies should not be assumed to represent an identical or authoritative state of the original website without provenance review.
