Overview

GeoCities was established in 1994 as Beverly Hills Internet and developed into one of the largest communities of the early World Wide Web. Users were provided with space to construct personal websites, initially organized within themed virtual neighborhoods.

The service became an important environment for personal publishing during the expansion of public Internet access in the 1990s. Its user-created pages documented hobbies, identities, fandoms, communities, personal interests, technical experimentation, and everyday life on the early Web.

Yahoo acquired GeoCities in 1999. The principal English-language GeoCities service was discontinued in October 2009, placing a corpus comprising tens of millions of user-created pages at risk of disappearance.

Prior to closure, multiple independent preservation efforts captured substantial portions of the service. These efforts produced overlapping archival corpora rather than a single complete surviving instance of GeoCities.

For catalogue purposes, the Bureau treats GeoCities as an aggregate Digital Object representing the historical hosting service and its surviving archival corpus. Individual GeoCities websites may be assigned separate FWX identifiers where their historical, cultural, or technical significance warrants independent cataloguing.

Preservation Note

No single surviving archival corpus is considered a complete continuation of the original GeoCities service. Preserved material is distributed across multiple external archival projects and varies in completeness, presentation, and accessibility.

The Bureau therefore records the object as a distributed archival preservation case rather than as an active or reconstructed service.
